The Cost of LiDAR

For solid-state LiDAR to become a mainstream technology and available within every self-driving car on the road, manufacturers must overcome the cost barrier.

While LiDAR technology is far from a new innovation, affordable LiDAR, something that’s been unavailable up to this point, has finally arrived.

Explore the influences of LiDAR cost and how Innoviz is enabling the autonomous vehicle revolution.

LiDAR Cost Yesterday and Today

Less than a decade ago, an advanced LiDAR system could cost upwards of $75,000. Recent advances by companies like Innoviz, however, are creating affordable LiDAR systems that cost hundreds, not thousands, of dollars.

Explore some of the factors that have influenced the cost of LiDAR historically, and how products like InnovizTwo are leveraging the technology to deliver improved safety at scale.

Why LiDAR Was Expensive in the Past

While LiDAR has been around for decades, the cost of creating and maintaining those systems, and ensuring the appropriate engineering to deliver high performance, has been expensive.
The primary reason is that before the advent of solid-state systems, LiDAR needed a number of moving components in order to operate which greatly contributed to the total cost. Thankfully, as the technology - and engineering - advanced, LiDAR systems became cheaper and more effective.

Technology Gets Cheaper Over Time

Advances in manufacturing and a reduction in material costs have both contributed greatly to a lower LiDAR price point. As the cost of LiDAR continues to fall, it will naturally become more practical to consider LiDAR solutions in the future.

Lower Cost Leads to Implementation

Today’s systems, such as the solid-state LiDAR products from Innoviz, are delivering high-performance at a lower price point, making it possible to integrate advanced LiDAR into a range of possible applications, including autonomous vehicles, at scale. The technology is attractive to automotive manufacturers in particular because it is easy to implement, inexpensive to maintain, and durable across a range of conditions (including inclement weather).

Cost Improvements Drives Innovation

In years past, the cost prohibitive nature of LiDAR created a high barrier to implementation for self-driving cars and other autonomous vehicles. As the material costs have come down over time, the engineering innovation has accelerated, making it far more practical to adopt LiDAR technology today.
